Dear Soror,
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® joins the nation in mourning the death of voting and civil rights activist Dr. Amelia Platts Boynton Robinson, who passed away August 26, eight days after her 104th birthday in Montgomery, Alabama.
Dr. Boynton Robinson was known as the "matriach" of the Voting Right Movement and served as co-founder of the National Voting Rights Museum & Bridge Crossing Jubilee in Selma, Alabama. She was a civil rights leader whose life centered on empowering disenfranchised African-Americans to fight for voting rights and land ownership.
In 1965, Dr. Boynton Robinson was instrumental in spearheading the 54-mile walk from Selma to Montgomery, which would become known as "Bloody Sunday," due to the deaths and beatings suffered by peaceful protesters at the hands of angry whites who opposed equal civil and voting rights, and integration. Although Dr. Boynton Robinson was beaten and knocked unconscious at the foot of the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge, her spirits were not broken. She continued fighting for civil rights and voting rights, and became the first woman to run as a Democratic candidate for Congress in Alabama. In March 2015, she joined hands with President Barack Obama and once again crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge during the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of "Bloody Sunday" and the Selma March. She remained a beacon for justice and equality until her death.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority honors the memory of Dr. Boynton Robinson and will continue to uphold her legacy by continuing to implement strategic voter awareness and education programs, encourage voting through our "Be the VOICE" initiative, and stand up for justice and equality. We are extremly grateful for her sacrifice, courage and the incredible impact she made on the history of our great nation.
Please keep Dr. Boynton Robinson's family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. Memorial service information is included below.
Sisterly,
