Dear {?cst_member_flag==1?Soror?} {ind_first_name},

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® as part of the Launching New Dimensions of ServiceSM program will continue to observe HBCU Awareness Week (September 21–25, 2015). We encourage all sorors – undergraduates and graduates, Silver Stars, Golden Sorors, and General Members – to participate in the Target I: Educational Enrichment, THINK HBCU initiative, which highlights Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Through education, engagement and advocacy, HBCUs are promoted as critical venues for enrolling and graduating students with enduring contributions to the Sorority and society.

THINK HBCU activities include:

Think HBCU $2 million AKA 1908 Campaign
– The sorority is embarking on a campaign to raise $2 million for HBCUs between September 2015 and June 2016 .

How: If each active soror generates (through direct donations or fundraising activities) $30 during this ten-month period, we will meet our goal. Chapters may hold raffles, bake sales, or solicit funds directly from members in order to reach this goal. Each chapter will be responsible for recording all donations made (online or directly to an HBCU) and to report this information monthly as directed by your region.

AKA THINK HBCUSM Hall of Fame
– Five sorors and one chapter from each region will be formally recognized at the 2016 Boule for THINK HBCUSM financial contributions and/or awareness activities from January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015 . In addition, the names of individual sorors and chapters will be placed on a commemorative plaque at the Ivy Center and receive special amenities at Boule. Recognition will be given annually through 2018.

Celebrate AKA1908 HBCU Pride Day – Whether you attended an HBCU or not, show your pride by wearing HBCU paraphernalia to your September chapter meeting and/or on Thursday, September 24 as we celebrate AKA 1908 HBCU Pride Day! Participating members should take a fun picture and post on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using the #ThinkHBCU and #AKA1908 hashtags.

Promote THINK HBCUSM throughout the fall at each Undergraduate Roundup and Cluster Conference during regional Think HBCU campaign as designated by your Regional Director.

Update: Revisions to AKA THINK HBCUSM Impact

In response to soror feedback, we are expanding how we calculate your donations to HBCUs. Contributions will be measured based on the following:

  1. Direct contributions via www.aka1908.com to the AKA EAF HBCU Fund
  2. Direct contributions to HBCUs
  3. Direct contributions to HBCU scholarship fundraisers (tax-deductible portion)
  4. Matching gifts sent directly to HBCUs by an employer
  5. Scholarships awarded to HBCUs

Please note that donations generated by items 2, 3, and 4 (listed above) must be validated with proper documentation from your chapter Program Chairman. This information will be collected through the THINK HBCUSM Survey online reporting process.

Finally, we will continue our AKA One Million Backpack Campaign at each Undergraduate Round Up and Cluster Conference as we march towards our goal of collecting and distributing one million backpacks in four years. Backpacks will be presented to area schools during these conferences. Each soror is asked to donate five backpacks annually. Donating at Undergraduate Round Up and/or Cluster Conferences will bring you a step closer to your individual goal.

Please contact your regional representative to the International Program Committee with questions.

Sisterly,
