Greetings Soror,
For decades, the "Skee-Wee" call has been a part of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's official and at times, unofficial history. In late 2014, the Launching New Dimensions of ServiceSM administration reinstated the usage of "Skee-Wee" and the pinkie hand gesture.
On January 10, 2017, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority a sound mark having U.S. Reg. No. 5,116,853 for the "Skee-Wee" call. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority now joins a small group (218 out of over five million confirmed registrations) of sound mark registrants consisting of companies and individuals (ex. AT&T, AFLAC, 20th Century Fox, NBC) that have successfully trademarked a sound. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority not only becomes the first not-for-profit and Greek-lettered organization to secure a federal registration for a sound mark, but we are also the only registrant to register a sound mark for association services, i.e., membership.

At the onset of this administration, we committed to enhancing our image and fervently protecting our brand and intellectual property. The "Skee-Wee" trademark, along with enhanced protection of our other symbols and logos over the last two years continues to adhere to our promise of honoring our 109-year history and ensuring our long-term perpetuity.
Please feel free to share this news of the new trademark with your friends, family, and fellow members of NPHC. Thank you
Sisterly yours,
Soror Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson
