Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Africare are partnering with Little Dresses for Africa to create an opportunity for sorors to help young girls in Africa. The pillowcase dress service project allows sorors to work together, independently or even with family members to make little dresses for communities in South Africa and Liberia. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is taking on the challenge to bring 29,000 pillowcase dresses to the 2016 Boule. Following the Boule, the dresses will be shipped directly to pre-selected communities in Africa. An article and photos of our donations will be featured in an Ivy Leaf following the Boule.

Ten Steps for Organizing Your Little Dresses for Africa Donations

  1. Download the sewing directions from the "Members Only" section of www.aka1908.com or access the document here
  2. Identify sorors in your chapter, or in other locations, who may have experience with a similar project or who like to sew
  3. Create a Soror Challenge to make dresses or set a chapter dress goal
  4. Organize your supplies, pick out pink and/or green material, and remember pillowcases are recommended as easy items to use
  5. Plan a "Sew and See" Sisterly Relations activity with sorors where you can socialize while designing your pillowcase dresses
  6. Take pictures of your "Sew and See" activity and post to Social Media using #AKA1908 and #AKALittleDresses
  7. Pack your dresses in plastic bags and label by size
  8. Complete the Little Dresses for Africa drop off form and bring with you to Boule
  9. Drop off dresses along with the form at the Africare Booth in the exhibit hall
  10. Join us at the Boule where we will announce our final count!
